Gambling and mental health

Young people face many challenges as they navigate their teenage years – from academic pressure and friendship dynamics to anxiety and loneliness. During difficult times, some may turn to gambling as a way to cope with these feelings or escape from their problems.

While gambling might provide temporary relief or excitement, it can seriously impact mental wellbeing. This creates a complex cycle where gambling and poor mental health feed into each other: gambling can worsen mental health, while mental health challenges can make someone more vulnerable to gambling.

Recognising the signs of gambling harms

Recognising when a young person is experiencing gambling harms can be challenging, as the signs are often subtle and may be masked by other behaviours or life stressors.

Changes in behaviour or mood might not immediately suggest gambling problems – they could indicate various other challenges young people face. However, understanding potential signs of harm can help you provide support before problems escalate.
