Roblox has long been a popular digital playground for children and young people, offering millions of user-generated games and experiences. But with its vast reach and diverse content, the platform faces ongoing challenges around safety and age-appropriate material.

Roblox has recently introduced a new ‘Sensitive Issues’ policy, implemented through the means of a content descriptor. This introduction marks a major update to the platform, aimed at helping parents and carers better manage what their children encounter online.

Here’s a little more information on what it means, why it was introduced, and how you can manage and safeguard your child’s Roblox experience.

What is a ‘content descriptor’?

A content descriptor is a label or tag that game regulators use to indicate the type of material or themes present in a game or experience. Think of it like a movie rating or a warning label – it helps you understand what kind of content your child might encounter before they play.

What subjects are censored?

Roblox has applied the new ‘Sensitive Issues’ content descriptor to experiences that are primarily themed around topics they deem as socially, politically, or religiously sensitive. These are issues that typically evoke strong emotional responses and polarised viewpoints, meaning they are often debated with little middle ground or context.

Some key topics censored include (but not limited to):

  • Immigration – experiences focused on border control, refugee movements, or national identity.
  • Marriage equality – experiences that centre on LGBTQ+ rights and legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
  • Reproductive rights – topics involving abortion access, contraception, or related healthcare issues.
  • Vaccination policies – experiences that discuss or simulate public health measures and vaccine mandates.
  • Religion in schools – content that touches on religious expression in educational settings.
  • Racial profiling and positive action – experiences that explore systemic racism, equity programs, or discrimination.

To qualify for the tag, an experience must meet two criteria:

  1. Polarised viewpoints – the topic has strongly opposed views with little room for compromise.
  2. Strong emotional response – the content evokes passionate debate or emotional reactions.

The policy went live on 11 August 2025 and applies globally to all Roblox experiences regardless of where they are created or accessed. Experiences labelled with this tag will be blocked by default for users under the age of 13.

Why has Roblox introduced this policy?

With over 39 million daily active users under 13, Roblox is one of the most widely used digital spaces for children, yet it has faced constant criticism for exposing young users to inappropriate or harmful content. This new ‘Sensitive Issues’ policy appears to be a response to the growing concerns about child safety on the platform.

In 2023, Roblox reported over 13,000 cases of child exploitation, and investigations revealed that children could access sexually suggestive games, interact with adults in private rooms, and be exposed to themes like violence, harassment, and political extremism. Despite moderation efforts, the sheer volume of user-generated content has made it difficult to catch every violation before harm occurs.

By introducing this policy, Roblox hopes to reduce risk and empower parents and carers to better manage their child’s digital environment and exposure to the online world.

What parents and carers need to know

If your child plays Roblox, this new policy is an important development in helping you manage their online safety. Here’s what you need to know:

Sensitive content is now flagged

Experiences that explore socially or politically sensitive topics are now tagged with the ‘Sensitive Issues’ descriptor. These experiences are automatically blocked for users under 13, meaning your child won’t be able to access them unless you choose to override the restriction.

You have control over what your child sees

Roblox’s updated parental controls allow you to customise your child’s access based on their age, maturity, and your family’s values. You can:

  • Adjust content settings to block or allow experiences with sensitive themes.
  • Review and approve individual games before your child plays them.
  • Set age-appropriate filters that align with your child’s developmental stage.

Not all sensitive content is harmful

Some experiences may address sensitive topics in educational or thoughtful ways. For example, a game might explore themes of diversity, inclusion, or historical events. Roblox’s policy doesn’t remove these experiences but gives you the choice to decide what’s appropriate for your child.

How to use Roblox’s parental controls

Roblox has also rolled out a more rigorous parental controls system to help you manage your child’s experience more effectively. Here’s how to get started:

Link your account – to access parental controls, you’ll need to create a Roblox account and link it to your child’s. This requires identity verification via ID or credit card.

Set content restrictions – you can choose the maturity level of content your child can access, i.e. ‘Minimal’, ‘Mild’, ‘Moderate’, or ‘Restricted’. The ‘Sensitive Issues’ tag is part of this system.

Block specific experiences – even within an allowed maturity level, you can block individual games. For example, if a game falls under the ‘Moderate’ category but you find its theme unsuitable, you can block it directly.

Monitor screen time – Roblox now provides insights into the top 20 experiences your child has played in the past week. This helps you spot any concerning trends and regulate if needed.

Manage friends and messaging – you can view and block specific friends on your child’s list and restrict direct messaging. Children under 13 cannot unblock users without parental approval.

Control spending – Roblox uses Robux, a virtual currency purchased with real money. Set monthly spending limits and enable purchase PINs to prevent unauthorised transactions.

Use the safety centre – Roblox’s updated Safety Centre offers guides, tools, and policies to help you stay informed. It’s a useful resource for understanding the platform’s standards and reporting mechanisms.

Get involved – Regularly check in and play Roblox together. Ask about their favourite games, creations, and friends. Open conversations help you understand their experience and keep them safe.

Safeguarding children must remain a priority for everyone, and any measures to protect them should be kept under constant review as new technologies, innovations, and potential harms continue to emerge. Roblox’s new ‘Sensitive Issues’ policy is a welcome step toward creating a safer and more manageable digital environment for children.

However, technology alone isn’t enough. Parental guidance and education are vital to helping young people navigate their online experiences with confidence and safety.
