Our founders story

In 2011, Lee Willows placed his first ever bet while out with friends, unaware of the impact this would have. In the years that followed, gambling consumed his life, costing him his life savings and devastating his mental health, eventually leading to suicidal thoughts. With the support of specialist counselling, he took his first steps toward recovery and transformed his life.

Motivated by his experience, Lee discovered there was a glaring gap in organisations focused on preventing gambling harms through education. He joined forces with Anne Evans and her husband Keith. Anne, a former teacher, had tragically lost her son Alan to suicide in 2010, at the age of 40, following a 25-year battle with gambling addiction.

Driven to make a difference, they founded Ygam with a shared mission: to use education to raise awareness and help ensure no other individual and family endures the pain and experiences they went through.

What began as the creation of individual resources and school assembly presentations has grown into award-winning, comprehensive schemes of work aligned with the national curriculum. Their vision has had a profound impact, shaping the lives of millions of children across the UK.

Anne Evans (1934 - 2025)

Anne redefined how children and young people are educated about the potential harms of gaming and gambling. Anne found the strength and unwavering determination to turn her personal pain into purpose. She dedicated herself to using education as a powerful tool to raise awareness, safeguard future generations, and prevent other families from enduring the pain she experienced.

In 2016, Anne’s outstanding efforts were recognised when Baroness Winterton nominated her for an NHS National Award for Excellence in Public Health and Wellbeing, celebrating her extraordinary contributions.

While Anne will be remembered for her instrumental role in establishing Ygam as the sector-leading charity it is today, those who had the privilege of meeting her will never forget her warmth, kindness, and innate ability to support and uplift those around her. Anne brought a unique sense of joy and light to every room she entered, leaving an enduring mark on everyone she met.

Anne’s lasting legacy remains at the heart of everything we do at Ygam.

Our patron

Baroness Winterton of Doncaster

Baroness Rosie Winterton served as the Member of Parliament for Doncaster Central from 1997 to 2024. In the 2024 Dissolution Honours, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer nominated Rosie for a life peerage, and she now sits in the House of Lords.

Poignantly, Baroness Winterton was the local MP of our co-founder Anne Evans at the time of her son Alan’s suicide following a devastating gambling addiction. Anne reached out for support as she sought to make a change, raise awareness, and ensure that more children had access to education on gambling harms. They became close friends, and Baroness Winterton played an instrumental role in supporting Anne to establish Ygam and ensure her voice was heard and her cause recognised.

Baroness Winterton now serves as a prominent ambassador for Ygam, using her profile and platform to champion the charity’s mission.
